More Info

It’s summer in Hurt, Virginia, where a lone cabin fills each year with campers. There’s homecooked breakfast and an army of box fans and lots of shifting in the dark. Welcome to Grief Camp: a study of loss and adolescence.

Reviews

An elliptical and episodic vibe of a dramedy. Grief Camp is a banquet of perfectly meshed design, fully inhabited by the lovable, convincing cast.

David cote, the observer

“A haunting, humane new play. Grief Camp offers plenty of room for humor and for touching insights.”

JUan a. ramirez, theatrely

“Shimmer-edged, soft-footed play, driven by extremely talented young actors.

Sharp poignancy and playful beauty.

Sara holdren, vulture

“Tony-nominated director Les Waters brings the same kind of insightful tenderness and heightened mystery he created so adeptly in Dana H. It is a sharply observed portrait of a time of life-altering pain and upheaval.

tim teeman, daily beast

“Les Waters’s staging of this play — Smith’s Off Broadway debut — for Atlantic Theater Company is marvelously realized. Waters has an affinity for creating slightly eerie, disquieting atmospheres.”

Elisabeth vincentelli, The new york times

“The power of the dialogue and the exquisite cast who bring these words to life are something to behold. This is one of the strongest shows of the off-Broadway season.

john soltes, hollywood soapbox

If you’re a fan of Annie Baker—then meet a compelling new voice carrying that torch: Eliya Smith.”

gregory fletcher, stage and cinema

“Excellent ensemble!

Grief Camp has one of the best directors for this kind of play. Les Waters charges the air with anticipation.”

Accessibility

CLOSED CAPTION PERFORMANCES

Atlantic is pleased to offer GalaPro, a free app for on-demand closed captioning that is available for download on your personal smart phone or tablet, iOS and Android. Tablets will also be available for checkout from the concessions bar in the lower lobby. GalaPro makes theater accessible for patrons who are hearing or sight impaired, or just don’t want to miss a word of the show. GalaPro has been carefully designed and tested in live theaters to ensure minimal disruption to the theatrical experience. Distractions to other patrons are extremely minimal as GalaPro uses a dark screen/text and requires your phone to be in Airplane Mode.
Instructions for how to use GalaPro can be found here.

Currently GalaPro is only available at our Linda Gross Theater for performances starting approximately one week after opening night. GalaPro will become available for Grief Camp performances from May 1 – 11.
