Reviews
“Wonderful! A powerful, funny, and moving new musical. Kimberly Akimbo is the rare example of a good play that has become an even better musical. Victoria Clark is one of our great singing actors. She brings Kimberly to life so believably and gorgeously. A terrific New York debut by the 18-year-old Justin Cooley. Pure enjoyability.”
JESSE GREEN, THE NEW YORK TIMES
“A fresh and gorgeous musical. David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori find hidden, sideways beauty. The show manages to stay on the brink — always laughing, never quite weeping — for its entire length and has the gorgeous sheen of something that has its eyes on larger audiences. ”
HELEN SHAW, VULTURE
“A momentous work of theater, exquisitely performed by a stellar cast of talent, known and new. Each person onstage is impeccable—just as the ones behind the scenes. With Kimberly Akimbo, Jeanine Tesori stakes a worthy claim on a career that will leave its own mark on this most American form.”
JUAN A. RAMIREZ, THEATRELY
★★★★
“The best new musical of 2021! Clever, touching, and idiosyncratic, Jessica Stone’s well-cast world-premiere production at Atlantic does it justice. The unstoppable Bonnie Milligan is a hilarious gale force of chaos.”
ADAM FELDMAN, TIME OUT NEW YORK
“A triumphant new musical. Funny, quirky, and very off center. Steven Boyer and Alli Mauzey delight with their inspired loopiness. Hardy, Hogan, Iskander, and White each shine. It’s difficult to think of a more auspicious New York stage debut for director Jessica Stone.”
ROBERT HOFLER, THE WRAP
“Victoria Clark is incredible and the show is pretty damn delightful, too. This is a family tragedy, albeit one so hilarious you’ll shake.”
DAVID GORDON, THEATERMANIA
“Jeanine Tesori is the most significant musical-theater composer of the past twenty years.”
DAVID COTE, OBSERVER
★★★★
“Tesori and Lindsay-Abaire have created a score of emotionally rich songs that glows like a musical mood ring. An ensemble that’s uniformly terrific.”
